BLC – Communities of practice white paper

Wenger, McDermott and Snyder (2002) define communities of practice as: Groups of people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area by interacting on an ongoing basis (Wenger, McDermott & Snyder 2002, p. 4).
The general notions that characterise communities of practice are as follows: bonding by exposure to common problems; common practices and language; common sense of purpose; groups that learn; and members evolve more creative practice.
The notion of a community of practice has emerged from current thinking of learning in general and workplace learning in particular, and can be seen as being underpinned by situated learning theory.
