World-first partnership will increase access to master's degress via the credentialing model.
In a world-first partnership, leading global social learning platform FutureLearn, owned by The Open University, will offer a range of postgraduate degrees from Deakin University in 2017. Included are Deakin University’s innovative master degree programs that allow students to gain academic credit for professional knowledge and experience gained in the workplace.
Individuals undertaking Deakin’s Master of Professional Practice (Information Technology) and the Master of Professional Practice (Financial Planning) can earn up to two-thirds of the credits by applying to have their professional experience assessed and accredited through Professional Practice Credentials provided provided by DeakinDigital.
DeakinDigital assesses professional skills demonstrated in a workplace context, awarding credentials that can be stacked into a macro qualification at Deakin. DeakinDigital’s Professional Practice Credentials are available in Self-management, Digital Literacy, Teamwork, Communication, Collaboration, Emotional Judgement, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Global Citizenship, Cultural Engagement and Professional Ethics as well as credentials in professional expertise.
Deakin’s partnership with FutureLearn means that DeakinDigital’s credentialing model will be available to a global cohort of future learners. It is the first time a MOOC (massive open online course) provider has offered degrees, fully online, entirely on its platform.
DeakinDigital CEO Simon Hann says the FutureLearn partnership will further improve access to postgraduate education. “The traditional model for a master’s degree is a huge commitment for professionals and part of our aim with Professional Practice degrees is to offer learners the flexibility and access they need to obtain qualifications in a way that is more compatible with their busy personal and professional lives,” he said.
Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander says the FutureLearn platform will better enable the achievement of learning outcomes aligned with life and career goals. “We offer students a streamlined and engaging education aligned with their life and career aspirations,” she said. “FutureLearn is an ideal partner because its platform is an elegant next generation learning environment that matches our curriculum framework.”
